Glucose and dextrose (d-glucose) injections have been used for several decades in Prolotherapy : A Part from The Book : Glucopuncture: A Clinical Guide to Regional Glucose 5% Injections

Glucose and dextrose (d-glucose) injections have been used for several decades in Prolotherapy (PT) But in PT, hypertonic solutions are used. According to dr Freeman from Virginia, “proliferative therapy, or prolotherapy, is a treatment for damaged connective tissues involving the injection of a proliferant solution which causes local cell destruction and triggers the body’s wound healing cascade”. Historically, there are different types of prolotherapy.

Prolotherapy originated in the US in the twentieth century and became known as Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy. Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy advocates the use of sclerosing products such as phenol, hypertonic dextrose or sodium morrhuate which are injected into entheses of ligaments, bands and tendons. One of the goals is to strengthen and tighten ligaments. Injections of sclerosing products into vessels, peripheral nerves or the epidural space should be avoided at all times. The goal of Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy is obviously different from sclerotherapy for varicose veins.
