Microsurgery is now being considered one of the many modern technological advancements in periodontology that have been adopted in the recent times. It is indeed a technique that could possibly be used in a variety of surgical specializations and as a standalone medical specialty. It is based on the concept that, with the right skills, human hands can perform extremely finer movements than the unaided sight is able to.

Nowadays, microscope-assisted medicine has expanded across all fields since its inception. Although microsurgery is a distinct technique, it has applications across several surgical specialties, and one of them is periodontology. The development of surgical operating microscopes, loupes, and micro-instruments in the field of periodontics has improved the level of mastery of periodontal surgery and has made the microsurgical approach a reality. In an effort to improve vision, reduce soft tissue stress, and improve surgical outcomes, periodontal plastic microsurgery makes use of a surgical microscope. Studies have shown that there is increased vascularization, improved flap mobility, the potential for primary wound closure and reduced or minimal post-operative pain owing to the superior aesthetic effects of microsurgery.
